WINTERHAWKS VS SPITFIRES

Posted by Katja Wulfers at Sep 29, 2009 7:12AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The official season began with a game against the Brampton Spitfires which ended with a 4-4 tie. The kick-off game saw the Winterhawks prove that they had the grit to fight until the last moments of play. The Hawks were first on the board with two goals minutes into the first period; first on a goal from McDonald assisted by MacGregor and Cunha. Seconds later MacGregor put another past the keeper on a pass from Cunha. The Spitfires fired back with three minutes left to bring the score to 2-1. Both teams took penalties during the first period of play.
The second period saw the Spitfires quickly tie the game. Officials had the Hawks and Spitfires in the bin again for interference and hooking. The Hawks were able to take another short-lived lead in the final minutes with some nice passing from Harrison and Michailoff, setting up Cunha for the Hawks 3rd goal. With 16 seconds left the Spitfires were back to tie it up.
Third period play was physical and fast and saw the Spitfires take 4 penalties and the Hawks another one. Brampton took the lead several minutes into the period and in the final 5 the Hawks tied it up again on a sharp goal by MacGregor with assistance from Cunha and Harrison. The Hawks gained momentum in the final minute of the game and hammered at the Spitfire keeper to almost get another one past in the final seconds of play.
Cunha had an outstanding game registering 4 points and MacGregor played beautifully proving that passing creates opportunities. The defence was strong and aggressive on the blue line. Corp and Schaap stayed cool despite the physical play. They proved up to the game and both made great saves during all three periods. Shots on net were 22-18 for the Hawks.

WINTERHAWKS VS BOMBERS

Posted by Katja Wulfers at Sep 12, 2009 11:11AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The second pre-season game saw the Winterhawks facing the Brampton Bombers for another round. The Bombers came ready to play and put the pressure on from the first puck drop. By contrast the Hawks started out soft and took a while to get in the game. Quick reactions by Corp kept the first period scoreless, but the Bombers outshot the Hawks 9-5. The second period looked to be a repeat of the first until the final minutes when Evans put in the Hawks’ first goal on a pass from Di Biasio with a nice set-up from Galarneau. A goal tending change midway through the second saw Schaap come in and keep the netminding just as sharp. The boys got into the groove and came out strong in the third. A goal seconds into the period by Evans with assistance from Isnor and Takeuchi put the Hawks up 2-0. Takeuchi and Di Biasio assisted Evans in getting his third goal past the Bomber’s goalie several minutes later. With less than five minutes left in the game Galarneau put one into the net on a beautiful play by Dutton and McDonald. Seconds later Harrison’s crisp pass found his teammate’s stick and Galarneau got his second of the game. Great backchecking by Mulraney throughout the game. Plays by the defence kept the puck in the offensive zone and created some good scoring chances. The entire team showed determination and kept up a steady effort to win 5-0. Congratulations on the shutout to Corp and Schaap!

WINTERHAWKS VS BOMBERS

Posted by Katja Wulfers at Sep 1, 2009 7:24PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Winterhawks began the season with an exhibition game against the Brampton Bombers. The team began strong right from the face-off and were on the scoreboard in the first period at 5:55 with a goal from Harrison. Two more goals followed in quick succession, first by Harrison with an assist from Galarneau and then the roles were reversed and Galarneau scored on a pass from Harrison. Milton was up 3-0 to begin the second period. Another goal in the second period by Mulraney with assists from Evans and Wulfers-Joyce saw the lead jump to 4-0. The defence played their zones well and were strong on the boards. Good, clean passing in the neutral zone kept the boys dominating most of the game, although Milton lost some steam early in the third period and the Bombers took advantage with 2 quick goals. The Winterhawks bounced back with 3 goals in the span of 3 minutes by Evans with help from Mulraney, Michailoff 45 seconds later on a pass from Dickin and another from Mulraney with assistance from Evans and Takeuchi. The Bombers took advantage of the disorganized Hawks screening Schaap and scored their third goal with 5 minutes left in the game. A late game penalty by Takeuchi could have provided Brampton scoring chances, but Milton quickly took advantage and scored 2 goals. The first unassisted by Harrison and the ninth goal of the game by Cunha with an assist from Harrison. Milton outshot Brampton 22-11 and the Hawks won the game 9-3. Good goaltending from both netminders. Great job guys on your first win of the year!
