HAWKS SHOOT DOWN LIGHTNING

Posted by Katja Wulfers at Nov 7, 2009 12:04PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Winterhawks’ fans got to see the second home game of the season this past Sunday when their team faced the Caledon Lightning. The boys played a passing game and outshot the Lightning 33 to 5. Final score in the game was 6-1 for the Hawks.
The Hawks made themselves at home in the Lightning’s end from the first puck drop. MacGregor and Harrison put together a great play and provided Michailoff with the first scoring opportunity of the contest. Less than one minute later a perfect opening allowed Evans to skate unaccosted and put the score at 2-0. The Hawks rounded out the period with a third from MacGregor on passes from Harrison and Michailoff.
Second period play saw the defence remain solid and allow for two more goals for Milton; the first on nice passing between MacGregor and McDonald to open up the play and get Michailoff his second of the game. The Lightning increased their tempo and were able to put one into the crease moments later. With seconds left Michailoff hammered it at the net and MacGregor picked up the rebound for the fifth goal.
The Hawks kept up their intensity in the third and scored the last point of the game with the MacGregor-Harrison combination again providing a scoring chance for Michailoff to get a well-deserved hat trick. A couple of penalties could have given the Lightning scoring chances, but the defence kept the play almost entirely out of their own end and didn’t allow a single shot on their netminder.
Good game team.

HAWKS SQUARE OFF AGAINST SNIPERS

Posted by Katja Wulfers at Nov 3, 2009 11:30AM PST ( 0 Comments )

An enthusiastic Winterhawks team set foot on the ice on Halloween to face off against the Brampton Snipers. Fans were introduced to their new pre-game cheer.
The Hawks outshot the Snipers 22 to 7, but were unable to find an opening more than twice during three periods of play. Despite that the boys stayed steady and were pumped throughout the game. They had their new rules in hand and worked hard to stick to them.
First on the board in the opening period were the Hawks with a clean shot from Evans on a play by Mulraney and MacGregor. Our defence kept their netminders safe until the Snipers got an opening in the final two minutes of the second to put one past Corp. The Hawks kept hammering at the Snipers’ keeper, but couldn’t get anything through. With three minutes of play left it was the Snipers who took the lead. The Hawks weren’t deterred and tied it up 30 seconds later with a goal from Harrison assisted by MacGregor.
The final score was 2-2 and the boys are looking forward to the rematch next week.

HAWKS STUMBLE AGAINST RAIDERS

Posted by Katja Wulfers at Oct 20, 2009 9:44AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Winterhawks faced the Georgetown Raiders for an exhibition match, but were not their dynamic, cohesive selves. Lack of speed and passing quickly took their toll and the Raiders got on the board unchallenged, taking a 3-0 lead over the Hawks to end the first.
The Raiders came out charging in the second and got their 4th point less than one minute into play. Moments later the Hawks picked up their pace with Michailoff and Galarneau setting up MacGregor to put one past the Raider’s netminder. Corp passed the baton to Schaap partway through the 2nd. Another opportunity for Georgetown saw their lead jump to 5-1 by the end of the period.
MacGregor took the lead for the Hawks several minutes into the last period and got his second of the game on a pass from Galarneau and Fagon. The third Hawks’ goal followed swiftly; again from MacGregor with help from McDonald. As the fight came back to the Hawks the Raiders turned up their game once more and snuck one past Schaap with six minutes left. Sooriya and Cunha provided the opportunity for MacGregor to get his fourth goal of the game with half the period left. The Hawks kept the momentum going but were unable to come back from their two point deficit.

HAWKS SOAR PAST BOMBERS

Posted by Katja Wulfers at Oct 13, 2009 9:22AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

On this third match-up between the Winterhawks and the Brampton Bombers both teams hit the ice with something to prove. The end result saw the Hawks take the win with a 9-4 outcome.
The visiting Hawks took the lead 6 minutes into first period play with MacGregor getting a rocket shot past the Bombers’ goaltender on a pass from Michailoff. With 13 seconds left on the clock Cunha and Di Biasio provided the opportunity for Harrison to get his first goal of the game.
The Hawks gained momentum and found their mark on five occasions in the second period of play. First up was a goal by Isnor on a pass from Cunha. Schaap faced 12 of the Bombers’ shots and was able to stop all but one which snuck past him at 4:39. The Bombers continued their aggressive play but were unable to prevent the Hawks from putting another 3 past their netminder in quick succession. MacGregor found an opening on a pass from Galarneau followed less than 2 minutes later by a goal from Takeuchi with help from Evans and Sooriya. Great passing from Michailoff and Harrison gave MacGregor his 3rd of the game. The Bombers stormed back, got through our distracted defencemen, and put their second goal in past Corp with less than one minute left. Three seconds to go and Takeuchi scored one more on another great set up from Evans and Sooriya to round out the Hawks five goals of the period.
Some great skating and manoeuvring had the Bombers score at 7:30 of the third. It took another six minutes for the Hawks to get back on the board with a replay of the Evans-Takeuchi-Sooriya combo, this time with Evans getting the point. To rebound, the Bombers got their fourth of the game seconds later. With typical Hawks’ drive, the team kept fighting until the last moments and Harrison was able to put a shot past the Bombers’ keeper with help from MacGregor and Michailoff. Another great game team!

WINTERHAWKS VS SHARPSHOOTERS

Posted by Katja Wulfers at Oct 6, 2009 4:55AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Winterhawks centre MacGregor scored his fourth goal of the game with less than a minute of play left in an 11-3 result at the Hawks’ first showing at Memorial Arena. The Hawks used speed and passing to beat the aggressive Brampton Sharpshooters in a game that saw both teams play hard through to the last buzzer.
Harrison put a goal past the Sharpshooters’ minder 18 seconds into the first period with a nice set-up from Dutton and Cunha. Michailoff knocked it into the net twice more during the period; first on passes by McDonald and MacGregor and then again by MacGregor with help from Galarneau.
The defence was solid in their zones, playing the blue line, and kept the action in the Sharpshooters’ end, allowing the forwards to keep the pressure on throughout the three periods of play. The Hawks went up again by a pair of goals two minutes into the second when Michailoff and Galarneau set up MacGregor for his 1st of the game. Less than a minute later Harrison put one in on a pass from Dutton and Cunha. The Sharpshooters rallied and got a shot past Corp a minute later. Then it was a repeat of the Harrison-Dutton-Cunha combo for Harrison’s 3rd goal. Corp passed the baton to Schaap half way through second period play. Both Hawks’ keepers proved a challenge to Brampton and stopped 15 of the 18 shots against.
Isnor blasted the puck between the Brampton netminder’s legs several minutes into the third with help from Takeuchi and Evans. A mix-up on a line change saw the Sharpshooters fly down the ice and get a goal past Schaap seven seconds later. Crisp passing from Michailoff and Galarneau set MacGregor up for the Hawks’ 8th goal. Seconds later Galarneau flew down the ice for an unassisted point. Brampton kept the pressure on and made it past the defence for their third goal of the game. But the Hawks weren’t finished and with less than one minute of play left MacGregor put his 3rd and 4th past the keeper with help, first from Galarneau and Wulfers Joyce and moments later from Michailoff and Di Biasio.
The Hawks had 35 shots on net, were determined regardless of circumstances and played a strong positional and passing game. Good job guys!
